Turn reference-video camera motion into controllable prompts
Read what the viewpoint actually does, separate it from subject movement, then write one camera path with a clear start, pace, and landing frame.
The short answer
Write the path between two compositions
A useful camera movement prompt is not a list of film terms. It describes how the viewpoint travels from an opening composition to a purposeful end frame while the subject performs a separately defined action. The smallest dependable structure is: start frame, camera path, subject motion, pace, and landing frame.
Begin with a timecoded shot list from the reference video. One row per shot keeps a camera move attached to the correct visual beat and stops movement from leaking across an edit.

Watch the background and foreground. Rotation changes what enters the frame; translation creates parallax; a locked camera keeps the frame stable while action happens inside it.
Subject movement
The action changes inside the view
A person can cross a static frame. A camera can track a person who stays similarly sized. Write both observations so the model knows which motion belongs to the world and which belongs to the viewpoint.
If the shot contains several actions or cuts, first split it with the scene-by-scene prompt workflow so each camera instruction has one visual purpose.

Choose the term that explains the visible path
These families are a diagnostic map, not a vocabulary contest. When two names seem possible, prefer the simpler description of what changes in the frame.
Rotate in place
Pan left or right · tilt up or down
The viewpoint turns from a fixed position; foreground and background do not slide past each other as they would during a translation.
Translate through space
Push in · pull back · dolly · truck · pedestal
Perspective and parallax change because the camera position moves closer, farther, sideways, upward, or downward.
Follow a subject
Tracking · leading · trailing
The camera maintains a deliberate relationship to a moving subject instead of simply watching the subject cross a fixed frame.
Curve around a subject
Arc · orbit
The background shifts behind a relatively stable subject while the camera travels along a curved path.
Change the lens view
Zoom in · zoom out
The apparent scale changes without the same perspective shift as a physical push or pull. Do not use “zoom” as a synonym for every move closer.
Define camera behavior
Locked · handheld · stabilized · drifting
This describes stability and texture. It modifies the primary path rather than replacing the path, unless the camera stays locked.

Read the reference before writing film language

Watch the background, not the subject
Ignore the performer for one pass. Track edges, doorframes, horizon lines, and foreground objects. Their relative movement reveals whether the viewpoint rotates, translates, or stays fixed.

Separate camera motion from subject motion
Write two plain observations: “the camera trucks right” and “the cyclist travels left to right.” If only one of those is true, mark the other as locked or stationary.

Name one dominant movement family
Choose the simplest term that explains the visible path. Use the observable result, not the equipment you imagine was used behind the shot.

Record direction, pace, and behavior
Add left or right, inward or outward, rising or falling, plus a useful pace such as slow, steady, abrupt, or accelerating. Add handheld texture only when it is visible and intentional.

Describe the opening and landing frames
State what the shot begins by showing and what the move reveals or emphasizes at the end. This gives the motion a destination instead of leaving it as an endless command.

Test the smallest controllable version
Generate the primary move before adding secondary motion, focus shifts, or transitions. If it fails, change one field at a time so the next result teaches you something.

Give every movement an origin and a destination
Use the same field order for each shot. The structure exposes missing decisions and lets you replace the subject without losing the camera logic.

Worked example
Convert a product orbit into a movement card
The reference shows a shoe staying still while the background slides behind it and the visible face changes from front-quarter to side profile. That evidence supports an arc or orbit; it does not support a pan from a fixed point.
- Foreground-to-background relationships change continuously.
- The product's scale grows only slightly.
- The product remains fixed while its visible side changes.
- The move ends when the sole texture becomes the focal detail.

Motion review
Remove six camera-prompt failure modes
- Using “cinematic movement” without a path, direction, pace, or destination.
- Calling every move toward a subject a zoom, even when the reference shows changing perspective and parallax.
- Combining pan, orbit, crane, tracking, zoom, and rack focus in one short shot without a clear sequence.
- Describing only the camera while leaving the subject free to drift, rotate, or change scale unexpectedly.
- Specifying equipment that cannot be inferred from the pixels instead of describing the visible motion.

What should a camera movement prompt include?
Name the starting frame, one primary camera path, its direction and pace, the subject motion, and the ending composition or reveal. These fields make the desired shot easier to inspect than a vague phrase such as “dynamic cinematic camera.”
What is the difference between camera movement and subject movement?
Camera movement changes the viewpoint: the frame rotates, translates, rises, falls, or changes focal length. Subject movement happens inside that viewpoint. Write the two separately so a walking person does not accidentally cause the camera to track them.
Should one AI video prompt contain several camera moves?
Usually, start with one dominant move per shot. If the reference uses a compound move, describe its phases only when each phase is essential to the reveal. Otherwise split the idea into separate scene cards and join them in the edit.
Can the same camera prompt work in every AI video generator?
The underlying shot logic is portable, but vocabulary and control strength vary by generator. Keep a model-neutral master prompt, then adapt supported controls and syntax using the current documentation for the tool you choose.
